What should I do if my baby vomits green or blood?
If your baby's vomit is green or has blood in it, call your pediatrician right away. The AAP lists blood or bile, a green-coloured material, in vomit as a reason to call, and the NHS lists a baby who keeps vomiting for 24 hours under urgent help.
Call your pediatrician right away (UK: your GP or NHS 111) if your baby:
- Blood or bile (a green-colored material) in the vomit

What the sources say
Blood or bile (a green-colored material) in the vomit
keeps being sick (vomiting) for 24 hours
At 3 AM
Green means green: a clear or dark green colour, not the yellow or cream of milk that has come back up. If you are unsure in the dark, turn on a light and look again, or photograph it.
Blood is a reason to call whether it is a streak or more. Do not wait to see if it happens again.
Keep the cloth or the diaper. Showing what came up answers more questions than describing it, and a photo with the time on it is nearly as good.
Have these ready: the baby's age in weeks, what the vomit looked like and when, how many times in the last 24 hours, whether the baby has kept any feed down, wet diapers today, any fever, and whether they seem as alert as usual.
If the vomiting keeps going, the log shows the pattern: feeds offered, how much came back, and wet diapers. Those three are what a clinician asks for.
Where the sources differ
The AAP's line is about what the vomit contains. The NHS's line is about how long it goes on. They are different signs that share an action, so this page keeps both: green or blood means call now, and 24 hours of vomiting means call even if the colour is normal.
You know your baby best. If you think something is seriously wrong, get help now.
This page is general information, not medical advice. If you're worried, call your pediatrician.
